Social Networking and Community Building
The following lesson plan is intended for 4th graders studying the California Missions, a topic addressed in the California Content Standards. They will use the following social networking sites to more effectively learn and share information about their assigned Mission.
"If you browse or read a lot on the web, we believe you will find Diigo indispensable. Diigo is two services in one -- it is a research and collaborative research tool on the one hand, and a knowledge-sharing community and social content site on the other."
"Almost certainly the best online photo management and sharing application in the world."
"Facebook's mission is to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected."

Lesson: California Missions
Objectives: Students will demonstrate their knowledge of their California Mission by creating a Facebook page that outlines the history of their mission, daily mission life, and includes a diagram of their mission.
Procedure:
1) Students will choose a partner and a Mission. They will find information online about their mission and use Diigo to bookmark, highlight, and share the information they found. Students will add their information for others to view to our class Diigo group, http://groups.diigo.com/group/miss-averkamps-class.
2) Students will find appropriate photographs of their missions including a diagram showing the layout of the mission. They will add it to our class group in Flikr: http://www.flickr.com/groups/2073942@N25/. This will allow students to view and share their photos.
3) Lastly, as a way of organizing and presenting the information they found, students will create a Facebook page centered around their Mission. They will work with their partner to include their Mission's history, daily mission life, and photographs onto the Facebook page. They will then be asked to become a "fan" of each of their classmates' mission pages. Students will be asked to read and comment on their peers' pages.
